During the last decade, the concept of embodiment has become a key paradigm of interdisciplinary approaches from the areas of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience. The body is no longer merely considered as an interesting input for the brain or mind. The new trend is to link embodiment, cognition and emotion in a deeper way, and this has particular repercussions for understanding our social engagements. This in turn has implications for psychopathology and psychotherapy, because embodied and intersubjective views on mental illness can offer new insights useful for diagnosis and remediation.

The conference is aimed at creating an interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of ideas on the themes of embodiment, intersubjectivity and their role in psychopathology. It brings together worldwide experts from the fields of developmental psychology, philosophy, and psychopathology, in order to advance on some key questions for this research area, among them:

    * What is embodied intersubjectivity? In how far is our relationships with others mediated by the body?

    * What is the role that embodied intersubjectivity plays for the development of social cognition?

    * How can mental illness be conceived from an embodied and enactive point of view?

    * What is the use of the notion of embodiment for therapy and training?

The conference is also intended to inaugurate the recently established Karl-Jaspers-Chair for Philosophical Foundations of Psychiatry at the University of Heidelberg.

This will allow all participants to actively engage with and discuss the topics of the main talks.

We are looking forward to an interesting exchange of views on one of the key questions of current research.

IDEE DES KOMMUNISMUS. PHILOSOPHIE UND KUNST ist eine wissenschaftlich-künstlerische Konferenz, die den Begriff Kommunismus neu und in seiner ganzen Bedeutungsvielfalt zu denken unternimmt und drei Tage lang alle Räume der Volksbühne bespielt. „Seit den Arbeiterbewegungen des 19. Jahrhunderts und ihrer Interpretation durch die großen Denker der Epoche besetzt das Wort Kommunismus die Grenze zwischen Philosophie und Politik. Es muss folglich heute zugleich ausgehend von seinem idealen Inhalt wie von den wirklichen Erfahrungen, in die es eingebunden war und in denen es mitunter schrecklich kompromittiert wurde, gedacht werden.“ (Alain Badiou) Daher werden zugleich die sozialistischen Staaten in den Blick genommen, die im 20. Jahrhundert das Motiv der Diktatur des Proletariats verkörperten. In dieser Absicht liegt ein regionaler Schwerpunkt des Kongresses auf den Ländern Osteuropas.

Im Mittelpunkt der Konferenz stehen Vorträge und Diskussionen zum Thema „Das Wort Kommunismus zwischen philosophischer Kritik und wirklicher Bilanz der sozialistischen Staaten“, initiiert von Alain Badiou (Paris) und Slavoj Žižek (Ljubljana). Weitere Vorträge von Cécile Winter (Paris), G. M. Tamás (Budapest), Artemy Magun (St. Petersburg), Saroj Giri (Delhi), Glyn Daly (London) und Janne Kurki (Helsinki). Kuratiert von Gernot Kamecke, Frank Ruda, Henning Teschke und Jan Völker.

Ein künstlerisches Programm, bestehend aus Performances, Installationen, Filmen und Konzerten beleuchtet das Thema ästhetisch. Im Zentrum des Kunstprogramms stehen Gastspiele zweier Performancegruppen aus der Balkanregion: Das Künstlerkollektiv BADco. aus Zagreb präsentiert seine beiden jüngsten Bühnenstücke 1 poor and one o und The League of Time, die um die Themen Arbeit und Utopie kreisen. Die Gruppe um Janez Janša (Ljubljana) zeigt die Performance Pupilja, Papa Pupilo and the Pupilceks – Reconstruction, das Reenactment eines slowenischen Neoavantgarde-Happenings von 1969. Frank Castorf inszeniert ein Lehrstück von Brecht. Thomas Martin richtet sein Stück SCHUTT als szenische Lesung ein. Bei einem Podiumsgespräch werden die Künstler/Theoretiker Felix Ensslin, Bojana Kunst und Jan Ritsema über die Bedeutung der „kommunistischen Hypothese“ (A. Badiou) für die Kunstproduktion heute sprechen. Weiter führt Nick Currie aka Momus eine unreliable tour zum Gegenstand des Communist Blackboard auf, die Theatermacher Anne Kuhn und Andreas Mihan sowie das Petersburger Polit- und Kunst-Kollektiv Chto delat’ präsentieren Installationen.

Letztere sind auch im Filmprogramm vertreten, das Geschichte und utopisches Potential der kommunistischen Idee verknüpft: 2+2 Practising Godard (ein Film von Dmitry Vilnsky und chto delat, RUS 2009) ist Erinnerungs-Akt und Remake, eine Godardsche Kino-Übung gegen polizeiliche Willkür. Eine Film- und Musik-Performance von Michael Busch (LUXUSBERLIN) führt Dowschenkos Filmklassiker Semlja/Erde (RUS 1930) mit dem Avantgardefilm Die Geburt der Nation (D 1973) von Klaus Wyborny zusammen. Weiter sind Chris Markers Essayfilm The Last Bolshewik (F 1993) und Alexander Kluges neunstündiges Filmepos Nachrichten aus der Ideologischen Antike: Marx – Eisenstein – Das Kapital (D 2008) zu sehen.
Der sowjetische Film spielt auch im Konzertprogramm eine wichtige Rolle: Marc Weiser aka Rechenzentrum führt eine Neuvertonung von Dsiga Wertows Klassiker Enthusiasmus (1930) live auf; der elektronischen Komposition dient die Tonspur von Wertows erstem Tonfilm als Klangquelle. Im Anschluss zeigt das Hamburger Agitprop-Kollektiv Schwabinggrad Ballett eine Konzert-Performance. Gefördert durch den Hauptstadtkulturfonds, die Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, die Éditions Lignes und das Institut Français.

The question of whether a system of ethics can be developed from existentialist principles has been long debated. One common objection to Kierkegaard, for example, is that he would close himself off from any form of sociability through a closed-off individual communication with God; he even speaks of a “suspension of the ethical.” In Being and Time, Heidegger famously denies the possibility of an ethical interpretation of human existence. In a similar way, Sartre admits in Being and Nothingness that from the perspective of the ontological description of human being, ethical consequences can only be derived in the mode of the “as if.”

But the actual course of existential philosophy tells a different story. From the beginning, existential thought opposed itself to narrowly self-directed academic philosophy and sought to apply itself to the concrete praxis of human life, as well as to related questions of moral philosophy. Although they differ in many ways, the various approaches of particular existential philosophers all center on the concept of human freedom, which Schelling described as the “faculty of good and evil.” This faculty stands as the condition of the possibility of any ethical system.

The conference is concerned with the paradox that existential philosophy either contains a strong connection to ethics or has a great distance from it – depending on the perspective chosen. Accordingly, we hope to address the following questions: How can we explain the fact that, despite its praxis-oriented approach, no significant ethical tradition has developed out of existential philosophy? Does the specific approach of existential philosophy preclude the possibility of discussing ethical questions? Or is existential philosophy measured against an excessively narrow concept of ethics, which it seeks to overcome? Should the concept of ethics be enlarged? Could this indicate the impossibility of developing an ethics in the traditional sense? Can positive social arrangements be derived from considerations about successful individual-to-self relationships? How does authenticity relate to social engagement?

In the spirit of existential philosophy, we wish to extend the discussion from the theoretical to the practical. All existentialists agree that freedom must always be understood as something practical, as an engagement of the individual with the world. This could be discussed through examples. We will address the question of whether the concrete social interactions of fraternity and violence can be justified within the framework of existentialism. Despite their seemingly obvious opposition to each other, both concepts appear equally in the existential tradition. Are they perhaps less contradictory than they seem at first glance, or do they really exclude each other? Does their equal status indicate the arbitrariness of ethical conclusions in existential philosophy? The concrete ethical engagement of individual existentialist philosophers can be also be critically examined in this regard. We are seeking contributions which deal with the systematic foundations of existentialistic ethics and which relate to one of the following topics.

The Nordic Network for German Idealism:
The Spirit of German Idealism

In the period from 2009 – 2011 the Nordic Network for German Idealism (www.NNGI.org) is arranging various conferences and workshops for researchers and post-graduate students with interest and expertise in the vast and varied field of philosophy, which takes the philosophies of Kant, Fichte Schelling, Hegel and Kierkegaard as its most crucial point of reference.

The third session will be from the 26th to the 28th of May 2010 at the Siemens Stiftung in Munich, Germany. It is a joint venture between the Department of Philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilian University, the Department of Philosophy at Aarhus University and the NNGI. At the third session there will be a conference on the 26th and 27th with invited speakers and a workshop for students (primarily at the PhD.-level) on the 28th.

The papers for the workshop are not restricted with regards to theme, but they should discuss or deal with the philosophies of Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel or Kierkegaard. Since the general theme for work within the NNGI is Spirit (Geist), we particularly welcome papers that deal with this theme. They may be historically oriented or deal with systematic issues as the authors see fit.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is April 15th 2010.

Practical issues
The NNGI will provide funding for travel reimbursement and accommodation during the conference for all participating students up to a maximum of 5000 DKR (about 660EURO). There is a maximum of 15 participating PhD-students. There will be lunch provided for all participants and an optional conference dinner. More information to come in this regard.

Graduate students are invited to apply, for the entire graduate school
as well as just for one session. They can also apply for giving a talk.
To this end, we invite submissions of extended abstracts between 1000
and 1500 words by the 11th of October 2008. Decisions will be made by
20th of October 2008. See the website for details.

Graduate students who have registered can attend all lectures without
fees. Students who apply for a presentation and are selected to present
their work will receive financial support. Participants in the whole
graduate school (both weeks) are eligible for a grant of 300 Euro. Those
who only attend the session at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum are eligible
for a 150 Euro grant. The four best presentations will receive an
additional award.

The Philosophy of Computer Games Conference 2008

We hereby invite scholars in any field who take a professional interest
in the phenomenon of computer games to submit papers to the
international conference "The Philosophy of Computer Games 2008", to be
held in Potsdam, Germany, on May 8-10, 2008.

Accepted papers will have a clear focus on philosophy and philosophical
issues in relation to computer games. They will also attempt to use
specific examples rather than merely invoke "computer games" in general
terms. We invite submissions focusing on, but not limited to, the
following three headings:

Action|Space

Papers submitted under this heading should address issues relating to
the experiential, interactional and cognitive dimensions of computer
game play. What is the nature of perceptual experience in game space?
How should we understand the relationship between action, interaction
and space in computer game environments? How should we think about
players' aesthetic, emotive and(/or) rational responses to what goes on
inside the game space?

Ethics / Politics

What are the ethical responsibilities of game-makers in exerting
influence on individual gamers and society in general? What role, if
any, can games serve as a critical cultural corrective in relation to
traditional forms of media and communicative practices, for example in
economy and politics? Also: what is the nature of the ethical norms that
apply within the gaming context, and what are the factors that allow or
delimit philosophical justifications of their application there or
elsewhere?

The Magic Circle

Terms such as "fictionality", "virtuality", "simulation" or
"representation" are often used to indicate specific functions of
objects in games. But what is the nature of the phenomena these terms
refer to in the interactive field of game play? And what is the
structure of gaming-processes? What is the mediality of digital games?
We are especially interested in discussions that aim at how the notion
of a self-contained "magic circle" – representing an imagined border
between play and reality, or the internal and external limits of
game-programs – is being challenged by forms of individual action and
social inter action which tend to transcend such limits.

Your paper should not exceed 25 000 characters (excluding blanks) and be
accompanied by an abstract of 300 words. Please specify the primary
focus (topic) of your submission.

Deadline for submissions is February 15, 2008. Send your paper and
abstract to .

All submitted papers will be subject to double blind peer review, and
the program committee will make a final selection of papers for the
conference on the basis of this.

Notification of accepted papers will be sent out by March 12, 2008.
