• Each presenter must submit the abstract separately (as a ”symposium presentation”)
• The abstract, paper and presentation must be in English.

Information about the symposium
The symposium regards philosophy with children (or even wider: philosophy in education), with focus on different perspectives on the performing of it and why it should be performed. The scope is broad, and theoretical as well as practical contributions are welcome. There will be a discussant at the symposium who have read the conference papers in advance and who will provide response. This requires that each presenter sends his or her conference paper to the discussant within appropriate time limits. More information about this will be sent to you further on.
Information about the specific date and time will be found in the general programme for the NERA conference presentations when this is set.

Kutsumme 1800-luvusta kiinnostuneita eri alojen tutkijoita osallistumaan 1800-luvun tutkimuksen verkoston neljänteen vuosiseminaariin

Modernin kohtaaminen 1800-luvulla

1800-lukua luonnehtivat monenlaiset aatteet, ismit ja ilmiöt, joita voidaan kutsua modernin ilmentymiksi. Miten moderni kohdattiin 1800-luvun tieteessä, taiteessa ja kirjallisuudessa, miten arjessa ja juhlassa? Miten siihen vaikuttivat sukupuoli, säätyasema ja maantiede? Mitä modernin omaksuminen, puolustus tai vastustus merkitsi makro- ja mikrotasolla? Mitä annettavaa modernin käsitteellä on nykytutkimukselle? Yhtenä erityisaiheena on näyttämötaide. Miten moderni kohdattiin oopperassa, teatterissa tai kabareessa? Session "Näyttämöillä! / På scener! / On Stages!" keynote-esitelmöitsijä on yhdysvaltalainen Roberta M. Marvin. Konferenssi järjestetään Helsingissä 26.-27.1.2012 yhteistyössä Topelius-seuran kanssa. Järjestelytoimikuntaan kuuluvat Anna Kuismin (Helsingin yliopiston tutkijakollegium), Eeva-Liisa Bastman (Helsingin yliopisto), Kaisa Kauranen (SKS & Helsingin yliopisto) ja Kirsi Tuohela (Turun yliopisto).

Pyydämme ehdotuksia yksittäisistä esityksistä (20 min.) tai kolmen esityksen
kokonaisuuksista. Ehdotuksesta tulee käydä ilmi esitelmän otsikko sekä henkilö- ja yhteystiedot. Korkeintaan yhden A4-liuskan mittaiset tiivistelmät lähetetään järjestelytoimikunnan jäsenille 30.11.2011 mennessä (anna.kuismin[at]helsinki.fi, eeva-liisa.bastman[at]helsinki.fi, kaisa.kauranen[at]finlit.fi, kirsi.tuohela[at]utu.fi.

Vi inbjuder forskare från olika vetenskapsområden att delta i nätverket för
1800-talsstudiers fjärde årskonferens som går under temat

1800-talet och mötet med det moderna

1800-talet karakteriseras av ett flertal fenomen, ideologier och ismer som kan ses som yttringar av moderniteten. Hur möttes tradition och modernitet i 1800-talsmänniskornas vardag och fest? Hur kom dessa möten till uttryck inom vetenskapen, konsten och litteraturen? Vilken inverkan hade faktorer som kön, stånd eller geografi på sättet att förhålla sig till det moderna? På vilka sätt bejakade, försvarade eller förkastade man moderna intryck och idéer och vilka blev konsekvenserna på makro- och mikronivå? Vad kan begreppet modernitet tillföra forskningen?

Konferensen ordnas i Helsingfors den 26.-27.1.2012 i samarbete med Topeliussällskapet. Organisationskommittén består av Anna Kuismin (Forskarkollegiet vid Helsingfors universitet), Eeva-Liisa Bastman (Helsingfors universitet), Kaisa Kauranen (Finska litteratursällskapet & Helsingfors och Kirsi Tuohela (Turun yliopisto).

Intresserade ombeds komma med förslag på föredrag (20 min.) eller förslag på helheter med tre föredrag. Abstraktet (max. en A4:a) förses med föredragets rubrik samt forskarens namn och kontaktuppgifter och sänds till organisationskommitténs medlemmar senast den 30.11.2011 (eeva-liisa.bastman[at]helsinki.fi, kaisa.kauranen[at]finlit.fi, anna.kuismin[at]helsinki.fi, kirsi.tuohela[at]utu.fi).

Konferensspråken är finska och svenska men föredrag kan också hållas på engelska.

Prestige in Language and History: Explorations in 18th- and
19th-century Europe

Studies of prestige comprise a multidisciplinary enterprise with links to research fields like sociolinguistics, network studies, social history, and cultural evolution. In Henrich & Gil-White (2001), prestige is defined as “noncoerced, interindividual, within-group, human status asymmetries”, or as freely conferred deference on an individual who excels in valued domains of activity. Prestige is a salient factor in human societies and networks. It affects our everyday lives, as prestigious groups or individuals serve as valued models e.g. for the choices we make and the attitudes we hold on many levels including lifestyles, consumer habits, affiliations, and language varieties. But how is prestige conferred on individuals or groups; who are the prestigious in different conditions; what sorts of consequences does prestige have in different domains of activity; and how do prestige patterns change in time and how can we study prestige in language and history? Understanding prestige as a multifaceted factor in human behaviour and interpersonal relationships will ultimately help us see prestige patterns as culturally and socially conditioned changing constructs.

This multidisciplinary seminar targets historical linguists and historians in particular and aims at a dialogue between scholars of different disciplinary backgrounds. We especially encourage younger scholars to participate in our discussion. We invite presentations that deal with prestige as a sociocultural and/or linguistic phenomenon in the diverse context of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, taking into account such factors as the rise of the middle class, nationalism and political upheavals, increasing interest in vernacular languages, urbanisation, the industrial revolution, and changes in arts, science and literature. Possible topics include, for example, prestige patterns in different social, economic and political conditions, consumer cultures, language standardization, power relations and contact situations, group cohesion, status-oriented vs. identity-oriented prestige, and lack or loss of prestige.

The seminar is organized by the Language and Identity research group in the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Helsinki. The language of the seminar is English. Please send your abstract (max. 300 words) to anni.sairio(a)helsinki.fi by 28 February, 2011.

Feminist Phenomenology and Medicine
May 18-21, 2011

Phenomenology and much feminist theory and philosophy investigate lived experiences and affirm the role of embodiment for human meaning-making. Furthermore, both unveil and scrutinize taken-for-granted and in this sense ‘hidden’ assumptions, beliefs and norms that we live by, that we strengthen by repeated actions and that we also resist, challenge and question. Whereas there is a growing area of feminist phenomenology dealing with concrete issues of embodiment and situatedness surprisingly little work focuses on topics/phenomena related to medicine and health. Whereas phenomenologists have made valuable contributions to the analysis of the nature of medicine, the meaning of illness and health as well as clinical practice, there have been comparably few analyses of such issues that combine insights from feminist theory and philosophy with phenomenology.

This conference is based on the conviction that facticities of human life, such as birth, illness, sex and death benefit from being examined in the light of feminist theory and phenomenology. More and more often, these facticities are managed in medicine, through medical treatment and medical technology. We want to approach both the facticities of human existence and the different ways in which these are being medicalized through the perspectives of feminist phenomenology. By doing this we want to bring to light the role of bodies in different human experiences and in subjective and intersubjective meaning-making. We want to examine taken-for-granted assumptions about bodies that inform and structure medical practices and lived experiences in medicine as well as in everyday life. We further want to raise questions of how the relation between phenomenology and feminism can be understood in a fruitful and mutually enriching way and how phenomenon such as birth, illness, sex and ageing can and does inform feminist phenomenology as a theoretical framework.

We welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives dealing with the overarching topic of feminist phenomenology and medicine. Topics can include (but are not limited to) phenomenological analyses and/or approaches to:

- ethics
- suffering and pain
- disability
- birth and death
- embodiment of subjectivity
- sexualities and sexual identities
- medical practices
- medical diagnosis
- bodily movement
- health

CFP: Kuolema ja identiteetti.

Kuolema – oma tai toisen – on muutos, jonka myötä suhde itseen, omaan kulttuuriin ja niihin yhteisöihin, joihin yksilö kuuluu voi muuttua, ja identiteetti joudutaan neuvottelemaan uudelleen. Pohjoismaisten kuolematutkijoiden verkosto (Nordic Network of Thanatology, NNT) Suomen jäsenistö järjestää 12.–13.5.2011 Helsingissä seminaarin, jossa tarkastellaan ihmistieteiden näkökulmasta identiteettiä ja sen suhdetta kuolemaan, kuolemiseen, kuolleisiin, kuoleviin ja sureviin sekä kuolemaan liittyviin henkisiin ja materiaalisiin arvoihin, rituaaleihin ja prosesseihin. Seminaari on monitieteinen ja pyrkii tuomaan keskenään dialogiin suomalaisia kuolemaa tarkastelevia tutkijoita ja asiantuntijoita eri aloilta.

Seminaariin toivotaan esityksiä seuraavista teemoista ja niiden suhteesta identiteettiin:

- läheisen ihmisen, kuten lapsen, vanhemman tai puolison kuolema
- lyhyt- ja pitkäaikaiset sairaudet ja kuolema
- media ja globalisoitunut kuolema
- virtuaalikuolema ja -sureminen
- kuolemanrituaalit ennen ja nyt
- kuolemanpelko
- kipu, kärsimys ja kuolema
- kuolleet ja edesmenneet
- käsitykset kuolemanjälkeisestä elämästä
- kuoleman materiaalinen kulttuuri

Esitykset voivat käsitellä teemoja myös suhteessa erilaisiin kuolemisen tapoihin (esimerkiksi sankarikuolema, marttyyrikuolema, itsemurha, kuolemanrangaistus, väkivaltainen kuolema, aborttikuolema, eutanasia).

Seminaarin valittavien esitysten tulee olla argumentaatioltaan tieteellisiä ja keskustelevia, mutta samalla myös suurelle yleisölle avautuvia. Esityksiä toivotaan myös työnsä puolesta konkreettisesti kuoleman tai palliatiivisen hoidon kanssa tekemisissä olevilta ammattilaisilta.

Esitysten abstraktit (max 200 sanaa) pyydetään lähettämään 15.1.2011 mennessä Anna Haveriselle, anna.haverinen(at)utu.fi. Lisätietoja seminaarista voi kysyä myös Ilona Kemppaiselta, ilona.kemppainen(at)helsinki.fi.

CFP: Död och identitet.

Döden – antingen ens egen eller någon annars – är en förändring. Med döden förändras ens förhållande till sig själv, identitet och ens egen kultur och de gemenskaper man hör till. Nordiska dödforskarnas nätverk (Nordic Network of Thanatology, NNT) kommer att arrangera 12.–13.5.2011 i Helsingfors ett seminarium med syftet att diskutera identitet och dess förhållande till död och döende, de döda och de döende eller sörjande människor, och till dödsrelaterade mentala och materiella värden, ritualer och processer. Seminariet är tvärvetenskapligt. Ett viktigt syfte är att skapa kontakter och möjligheter för dialog mellan forskarna och experter som studerar död på olika ämnesområden.

Vi välkomnar papers med följande teman

- nära anhöriges, liksom barnens, förälders, makans eller makens död
- kort- och långvariga sjukdomar och död
- media ja globaliserad död
- virtuell död ja sorg
- dödens ritualer förr och nu
- dödsfruktan
- smärta, lidande och död
- de döda och avlidna
- kulturella uppfattningar om liv efter död
- dödens materiella kultur

Presentationer kan också handla frågorna i relation till olika döendesätt (till exempel hjältedöd, martyrdöd, självmord, dödstraff, våldsam död, abortdöd, eutanasi).

Vi önskar vetenskapligt argumenterande presentationer som samtidigt öppnar sig mot den breda allmänheten. Vid sidan av forskare önskas presentationer också från de experter som arbetar konkret med död eller inom palliativt vård.

PHENOMENOLOGY IN TIMES OF CRISIS 

We hereby announce a call for papers on new research in the area of phenomenology, phenomenological philosophy and related philosophical disciplines. We welcome proposals from senior researchers as well as from graduate students. 

The accepted papers will be presented in parallel sessions (maximum 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion). 

Please submit your proposal in the form of a suggested title and an abstract (maximum 200 words). 

We welcome suggestions for joint panels on current topics and recently published books.  Proposals should be sent to Björn Thorsteinsson at bjorntho(at)hi.is. 

Deadline for submission: 15 November 2010.

Vastuu ja vastuunkanto historiassa

Vastuu velvoittaa mutta myös oikeuttaa. Vastuunkantamisessa näyttää olevan kyse inhimillisen kulttuurin ilmiöstä tai ihanteesta, joka kytkeytyy yhteisöllisyyteen, välittämiseen ja moraaliinkin. Mutta vastuunkantamisella voidaan perustella ja selittää monenlaista toimintaa, myös propagoida omien intressien edistämiseksi.
Vastuunkannon luonne retoriikkana ja puhetekona tulee havainnollisesti esiin siinä, että monissa kielissä, kuten suomessa, vastuunkantamisen käsite juontaa juurensa vastauksen tai sitoumuksen antamisesta.

Historiallinen Aikakauskirja julkaisee kesällä 2011 teemanumeron, jossa käsitellään vastuunkantamista ja välittämistä eri aikakausina erilaisissa yhteiskunnissa ja yhteisöissä. Artikkelit voivat käsitellä esimerkiksi vastuunkannon rakenteellisia ja toiminnallisia ilmenemismuotoja tai vastuunkantamista koskevia ihanteita tai ihanteiden ja todellisuuden välistä ristiriitaa. Käsitehistoriallinen lähestymistapa on tervetullut - onhan vastuuta ja siihen liittyvää vallankäyttöäkin eri aikoina perusteltu esimerkiksi yleisellä hyvällä, yhteisvastuullisuudella tai yhteiskuntavastuulla.
Artikkelissa voidaan vaihtoehtoisesti tarkastella myös piittaamattomuutta, itsekkyyttä, välinpitämättömyyttä ja (edes)vastuuttomuutta. Artikkeleiden enimmäispituus on noin 40 000 merkkiä välilyönteineen.

Kirjoitustarjoukset (abstraktit), joiden tulee olla noin 1 500-3 000 merkkiä pitkät välilyönteineen, pyydetään lähettämään 15.10.2010 mennessä Marko Lambergille osoitteeseen marko.lamberg(at)jyu.fi. Toimitus ilmoittaa valinnoistaan marraskuun alkuun mennessä. Teemanumeroon valittujen artikkelikäsikirjoitusten tulee olla toimituksella 15.3.2011 mennessä, jonka jälkeen ne käyvät lävitse tieteellisten käytäntöjen mukaisen vertaisarvioinnin ja toimitusprosessin.

Historiallisen Aikakauskirjan seuraava, historiatietoisuutta koskeva

RAPPIO! - kevätseminaari turhan tutkijoille

Tutkitko populaari-, historia-, teknologia- tai muiden kulttuurien 'hävettäviä' alueita? Oletko kohdannut tutkimustasi esitellessä tilanteita, joissa aiheesi oikeutusta epäillään? Onko sinulta kysytty, kuinka tuollaista voidaan yleensäkään tehdä saati sitten tutkia? Koetko joutuvasi selittelemään aineistojasi, metodejasi ja tuloksiasi?

Turun yliopiston digitaalisen kulttuurin oppiaine järjestää yhteistyössä IIPC:n (International Institution of Popular Culture) ja paikallisten toimijoiden kanssa RAPPIO! -seminaarin perjantaina 15.4.2011 Porin yliopistokeskuksessa, vanhan Puuvillatehtaan miljöössä. Rappioteemaan ulkoisestikin sopiva historiallinen rakennuskompleksi on kehtona useille arveluttaville vapaa-ajan toiminnoille (esim. kahvila A-oikeuksin, taistelulaji- ja crossfit-sali, lainsuojaton teatteri sekä yliopisto-opiskelijoiden biletila).

Kulttuurintutkijoiden usein kohtaamia ongelmatilanteita kieli poskessa lähestyvä seminaari on suunnattu kaikille viihteellisten ja yleensäkin 'turhien' aiheiden tutkijoille. Tilaisuudella halutaan tuoda esiin näkemystä siitä, että kulttuuristen ilmiöiden ja prosessien tutkimuksessa ei ole olemassa kohteita, joita ei sovi tai kannata tarkastella. Iltaohjelma noudattaa seminaarin teemaa: Rappiobileissä voit ottaa konkreettista tuntumaa nyky-yhteiskunnan dekadenssiin.

Pyydämme nyt ehdotuksia seminaarin sisällöiksi. Voit ehdottaa esimerkiksi toiminnallista työpajaa, paneelikeskustelua, perinteistä työryhmäsessiota tai esitystä johonkin edellä mainituista.

Mahdollisia teemoja voivat olla esimerkiksi:
•       Oman tutkimuksen esittely
•       Populaaritutkimuksen kritiikki
•       Oman tutkimuksen saama vastaanotto
•       Viihteellisen aiheen 'hyväksi' kontekstualisoiminen
•       Muut tutkimustyöhön liittyvät ongelmat (esim. tutkimusetiikka)

SFY:n Ymmärrys-kollokvio; CFP deadline

Suomen Filosofinen Yhdistys ry järjestää 10.–11.1.2011 Turun yliopistossa perinteisen ”yhden sanan kollokvion”, jonka teemana on tällä kertaa YMMÄRRYS. Kutsuttujen esitelmien lisäksi ohjelmaan sisällytetään myös tarjottuja suomen- tai ruotsinkielisiä esitelmiä. Kutakin esitelmää varten on varattu aikaa 20 minuuttia sekä 10 minuuttia keskustelulle. Valikoima esitelmistä pyritään julkaisemaan vuoden 2011 aikana.

Esitelmissä voidaan käsitellä esimerkiksi seuraavia teemoja:
- ymmärrys ja sen historialliset ulottuvuudet
- ymmärtäminen ja tieto
- ymmärryksen ehdot ja rajat
- ymmärtäminen ja selittäminen
- tieteellinen ymmärrys
- uskonnollinen ymmärrys
- ymmärtäminen ja toiseus
- itseymmärrys

Esitelmän pitämisestä kiinnostuneilta pyydämme alustavaa otsikkoa ja noin 400 sanan (yhden sivun) abstraktia 15.10.2010 mennessä. Tarjotut abstraktit arvioidaan. Filosofiska Föreningen i Finland rf ordnar vid Åbo universitet 10.–11.1.2011 sitt traditionella ”ett ords -kollokvium”. Temat för denna gång är på finska YMMÄRRYS. Förutom inviterade föredrag inbjuder vi också andra att lämna in förslag till föredrag, på svenska eller finska. För varje föredrag reserveras 20 minuter och 10 minuter för diskussion. Ett urval av föredragen kommer enligt planen att publiceras under år 2011.

Föredragen på kollokviet kan behandla bl.a. följande områden:
- förståndet och dess historiska dimensioner
- förståelse och vetande
- förståndets betingelser och gränser
- förståelse och förklaring
- vetenskaplig förståelse
- religiös förståelse
- förståelse och annanhet
- självförståelse

De som är intresserade av att hålla ett föredrag ombeds skicka en titel och ett abstrakt på ca 400 ord (1 sida) senast 15.10.2010. Abstrakterna kommer att värderas. Titeln och abstraktet ska skickas till Valtteri Viljanen (Käyttäytymistieteiden ja filosofian laitos, 20014 Turun yliopisto; e-post: valvil(at)utu.fi).

Studia Phaenomenologica Vol XI (2011): Concepts of Tradition in Phenomenology

The 2011 issue of Studia Phaenomenologica is dedicated to the topic: Concepts of Tradition in Phenomenology. As it is commonly known, Husserl’s phenomenology demanded at its first breakthrough a total refutation of all uncertified knowledge, theory or meaning inherited from the past. However, the development of phenomenological inquiry gradually resulted in a more ambiguous attitude towards history and tradition. On the one hand, history and tradition are necessary but still unfortunate distortions, which hinder phenomenological research in its strive for original self-givenness; on the other hand, they become themselves universal phenomena that must be explored as such.

As recent publications of late Husserlian manuscripts have revealed, Husserl himself became more and more aware of these topics in his last decade, as he was finally inclined to interpret the Life-world itself in its full concreteness as a “generative tradition”. Tradition in this sense pertains to all meaning sprung from earlier acquisition. Therefore, the concept obviously exceeds its ordinary meaning, exclusively related to inter-subjective historical inheritance, by gaining a fundamental importance for all areas of phenomenological analysis, as they all have the characteristic of “traditionalizing”. Thus, there is “tradition” at work in all action or bodily movement, in every instance of a given situation and in any relation to another thing or being.

Understood in this broad sense, the term does not address only the genetic fact of sedimentation, but also a specific, “habitual” quality that things allow to see through themselves, as bearers of a past. Hence, the theme marks an intersection of various problematic strata in Husserlian phenomenology, starting from the correlation of genetic and static phenomenology, following through different aspects of phenomenological methodology, and up to several ground-themes of phenomenological research, such as historicity, memory, language, bodily existence, inter-subjectivity, life-world and others.

The same twofold relation to tradition – of growing thematic interest, on the one hand, and utter criticism, on the other – shows in the post-Husserlian phenomenology as well. Heidegger, for instance, is from his early beginnings convinced that history should be the true guideline for phenomenological research, while at the same time pleading for a systematic destruction of the philosophical tradition. A similarly ambiguous position defines his later project of transcending metaphysics, and certainly other examples can be found as well.

The aim of our 2011 issue is therefore to explore the two fundamental poles that define the phenomenological approach of tradition: the task of understanding the problem of tradition thematically, on one hand, and the necessity of confronting it methodically as a residual distortion, on the other hand.

We welcome all submissions addressing either one of these two landmarks. Contributions to the late Husserlian topic of “tradition”, in its universal acceptation or in some concrete life-worldly application, are particularly encouraged, as well as submissions dealing with other, post-Husserlian, phenomenological approaches to the concept of “tradition”.
