Taustatietoja aiheesta:

Käsitteiden luomisesta ja kumouksellisesta ajattelusta tunnettu Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995) aloitti uransa kurinalaisena filosofian klassikoiden tulkitsijana. Vuonna 1963 ilmestyneessä kolmannessa teoksessaan Deleuze esittelee Immanuel Kantin kolmessa kritiikissään kehittelemän opin mielenkykyjen välisistä suhteista. Hän näyttää kriittisen filosofian systemaattisena hankkeena, jonka yhtenäisyys on peittynyt kuhunkin kritiikkiin erikseen keskittyneiden tietoteoreettisten, moraalifilosofisten tai esteettisten tarkastelujen alle. Lisäksi Deleuzen tulkinta osoittaa kahden ensimmäisen kritiikin varjoon jääneen Arvostelukyvyn kritiikin keskeisen merkityksen koko kriittisen filosofian kannalta. Kantin kriittinen filosofia on innostava ja tiivis johdatus Kantin filosofiaan, ja se myös taustoittaa valaisevasti Deleuzen myöhempää ajattelua.

Gilles Deleuze oli ranskalainen filosofi, joka tunnetaan filosofian historian konstruktiivisista ja luovista uudelleenluennoistaan sekä uuden ajattelun ja käsitteiden kehittämisestä. Hän kehitteli olemisen yksiäänisyyden ja moneuden metafysiikkaa sekä tapahtuman filosofiaa pyrkien omien sanojensa mukaan etsimään Nietzschen ja Spinozan ajattelun suurta ykseyttä. Deleuze oli edelläkävijä erojen, voimien ja rihmastojen ajattelussa.

Julius Telivuo opiskelee filosofiaa Helsingin yliopistossa. Hän on kiinnostunut erityisesti Gilles Deleuzen luovasta ja perinnettä elävöittävästä filosofian historian käytöstä.

Uusi esitelmä- ja keskustelusarja TAIDE ELÄMÄ FILOSOFIA liikkuu siellä missä taide ja filosofia kohtaavat: kokemisen ja ajattelun leikkauspisteissä. Sarja tarjoaa pohdittavaksi kulttuurimme keskeisiä kysymyksiä merkityksestä ja olemassaolosta, esittämisestä ja ilmaisusta, kauneudesta ja kokemisesta.

Luentosarja on jatkoa professori Pekka Himasen Pointissa 2.9. pitämälle luennolle Arvokas elämä.

Onko makuasioista turha kiistellä?
Miksi kreikkalaiset yhdistivät kauniin siihen mikä maailmassa on hyvää ja totta, kun taas modernilla ajalla kaunis on usein ymmärretty pikemminkin subjektiiviseksi kokemukseksi? Onko kaunis vain miellyttävää vai voiko se vavahduttaa tuskallisella tavalla?

Sisältö: Klassisen kreikkalaisen kauneuskäsitteen ja modernin kauneuskäsitteen eroja.

Between Bodies

– emotion • sense • affect –

The second Uppsala University Body/Embodiment Symposium

November 18-19, 2010

Emotion and affect lie at the very heart of our understandings of the world: subjectivity is embedded and embodied and bodies, in their very being, are transgressive and transgressed as the ‘self’ and ‘the world’ bleed into one another through the various porosities of the senses. Such sensory immediacy highlights both the temporal primacy of our senses in understandings of the world but also the way in which particular senses demand attention at particular times in particular contexts. Thus not only are the senses, emotions, and affect, primary to our perception of the world, but they also operate within personal, cultural and political orderings dependent on the positioning of the individual, collective, species. Thus, affecto-emotional registers foster attachment to place, are dependent on space, cultures, technologies; they delineate, reinforce, undermine and are dependent on the material and cultural boundaries which we hold as significant. They are overarched by the multiplicity of approaches, theories and conceptual frameworks that decide which sense(s), emotion(s), affects are significant and how they should be (re)presented. Further, the endemic anthropocentricism of these frameworks has shaped which sensory immediacies are prioritised along the strata of animality, with concepts of sense, subjectivity and emotion simultaneously deployed to police the various divides between human and animal, and also to create the contact zones where human-animal encounters become most apparent.

The symposium takes its point of departure from the role of the body as a centre for emotions, sensations and affectivity. It enquires into the relation between inner emotions and their expression in outer forms of behavior. It questions the role of emotion and affectivity as foundational for intellectual life, for thinking, rationality and communication. It highlights the vast milieu of meetings between human and animal, nature and technology, self and other and places focus on bodily boundaries, points of meeting/melting/tension, kinship and skinship between bodies; making manifest the interrelationality of drawing boundaries and constituting singularities, differences and commonalities. Confirmed Key note speakers are Eva Hayward (University of New Mexico) and Myra Hird (Queens University).

We welcome papers from both within and beyond academia on a wide range of topics within the scope of the overarching theme of the symposium. Studia Phaenomenologica Vol XI (2011): Concepts of Tradition in Phenomenology

The 2011 issue of Studia Phaenomenologica is dedicated to the topic: Concepts of Tradition in Phenomenology. As it is commonly known, Husserl’s phenomenology demanded at its first breakthrough a total refutation of all uncertified knowledge, theory or meaning inherited from the past. However, the development of phenomenological inquiry gradually resulted in a more ambiguous attitude towards history and tradition. On the one hand, history and tradition are necessary but still unfortunate distortions, which hinder phenomenological research in its strive for original self-givenness; on the other hand, they become themselves universal phenomena that must be explored as such.

As recent publications of late Husserlian manuscripts have revealed, Husserl himself became more and more aware of these topics in his last decade, as he was finally inclined to interpret the Life-world itself in its full concreteness as a “generative tradition”. Tradition in this sense pertains to all meaning sprung from earlier acquisition. Therefore, the concept obviously exceeds its ordinary meaning, exclusively related to inter-subjective historical inheritance, by gaining a fundamental importance for all areas of phenomenological analysis, as they all have the characteristic of “traditionalizing”. Thus, there is “tradition” at work in all action or bodily movement, in every instance of a given situation and in any relation to another thing or being.

Understood in this broad sense, the term does not address only the genetic fact of sedimentation, but also a specific, “habitual” quality that things allow to see through themselves, as bearers of a past. Hence, the theme marks an intersection of various problematic strata in Husserlian phenomenology, starting from the correlation of genetic and static phenomenology, following through different aspects of phenomenological methodology, and up to several ground-themes of phenomenological research, such as historicity, memory, language, bodily existence, inter-subjectivity, life-world and others.

The same twofold relation to tradition – of growing thematic interest, on the one hand, and utter criticism, on the other – shows in the post-Husserlian phenomenology as well. Heidegger, for instance, is from his early beginnings convinced that history should be the true guideline for phenomenological research, while at the same time pleading for a systematic destruction of the philosophical tradition. A similarly ambiguous position defines his later project of transcending metaphysics, and certainly other examples can be found as well.

The aim of our 2011 issue is therefore to explore the two fundamental poles that define the phenomenological approach of tradition: the task of understanding the problem of tradition thematically, on one hand, and the necessity of confronting it methodically as a residual distortion, on the other hand.

We welcome all submissions addressing either one of these two landmarks. Contributions to the late Husserlian topic of “tradition”, in its universal acceptation or in some concrete life-worldly application, are particularly encouraged, as well as submissions dealing with other, post-Husserlian, phenomenological approaches to the concept of “tradition”.

PHENOMENOLOGY IN TIMES OF CRISIS


We hereby announce a call for papers on new research in the area of phenomenology, phenomenological philosophy and related philosophical disciplines. We welcome proposals from senior researchers as well as from graduate students.


The accepted papers will be presented in parallel sessions (maximum 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion).


Please submit your proposal in the form of a suggested title and an abstract (maximum 200 words).


We welcome suggestions for joint panels on current topics and recently published books.

Neo-Logicism and its Logic

ABSTRACT.
The larger part of the philosophical discussion related to the neo-logicist
program has focused on the status of Hume’s Principle and other abstraction
principles. Much less attention has been paid to the rather undisturbed use of
second order logic in the program. I shall demonstrate beyond dispute that there
is a definite sense in which Hume’s Principle does very little in the derivation
of Frege’s theorem, which is the core of the neo-logicist program, and that it
is the background logic assumed that in fact does most of the mathematical work;
it turns out that the latter smuggles in certain quite strong set-existence
postulates. And that is obviously very problematic, if the project is to
vindicate logicism in some sense.
